Street fairs

The West Seattle street fair is on right now. Four blocks on California Ave. down at the Admiral Junction are closed off. I'm community minded, really. So I hopped on my bike and went to check it out.

They're all kind of the same, of course. I don't know why I would think they'd ever be different. But I'm just that optimistic I guess.

The only thing is I wish I hadn't had lunch before I went. That's kind of all it would have been good for to me.

The visit left me with a few questions.

How many people can there be who have been to India and Tanzania, looked at cheap crafts, and thought, "I could buy a ton of this stuff, take it home and double my money!" Apparently, there's a lot of them. And they like to wear batik. There were probably eight booths like that. Candles. Dark wooden bowls. And lots of enthusiastically colored diaphanous blowsy garments.

Why don't companies that sell windows take a walk through the fair themselves? It's clear they don't - because you'd think they then would see that every single one of the has the same gimmick: "Free Windows! You can win Free Windows!" There's a bucket to drop your name and address and phone number in. You won't win. But you will get a call from a window salesman. There were half a dozen window sales booths.

And maybe this works, but my doubt is raised: who shops for their church at a street fair? There were probably ten booths representing churches. There was even a super-kewl Skate Church, for you rad sidewalk surfers who just feel you're missing something inside. But asking me if I want a free pen, then, oddly, going on to ask about my relationship with Him...it's odd. They need to work on the approach.

All in all a harmless half hour amongst the hordes. But note to self: been there, seen that. Again.
